Cody’s Key Campaign Issues

#1 Accountability To The People

According to the Declaration of Independence, the government gets its power to govern from the people that it governs. As the Declaration says, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.
I believe our state Government should be transparent.  Transparency promotes accountability and provides information for citizens about what their Government is doing.
Public engagement enhances the Government's effectiveness and improves the quality of its decisions. My office will create and promote forums that increase opportunities for citizens to participate in policymaking and to provide their Government with the benefits of their collective expertise and information.

#2 Constitutional Liberties/ Limiting Government Encroachment

Too Much Traffic
I believe all American’s have the right to certain civil liberties that the government cannot abridge, either by law or by judicial interpretation, without due process.
I believe in your right to digress the Government, your right to bear arms against any threat foreign or domestic, the freedom of the press, your freedom of religion, your  freedom of expression, your freedom to assemble peacefully, your right to liberty, your freedom of speech, your right to privacy, your right to equal treatment under the law and due process, your right to a fair trial, your right to life, your right to own property, and your right to defend yourself.
My office will serve the Georgia Senate District 3 by proudly, and loudly, protecting these inalienable rights and freedoms in order to preserve our conservative values and American way of life.

#3 Conserving Wild Georgia

As an outdoorsman, I believe it is my duty to work towards preserving our precious natural resources and to hold companies responsible for environmental disasters in our district accountable for their actions.

My office will work to expand and promote sustainable fishing and hunting practices, hold the owners of the Golden Ray accountable for the disaster in the St. Simon Sound, monitor proposed strip mining along the fragile Okefenokee Swamp ecosystem, STRONGLY OPPOSE the proposed Brantley landfill,  and require strict environmental monitoring of the proposed Spaceport Camden Launch Site, including the impact to human health.

The unadulterated beauty and undisturbed wilderness are what attracts thousands of tourists to our state every year and is vital to the success of many local economies. As a legislator I will propose meaningful, common-sense policy that ensures our home will be sustainable for many future generations of Georgians.

#4 Small Businesses, Creating Job Opportunities, An Educated Workforce

Too Much Traffic
As a small businessman, I know it can be hard to get your foot in the door. Between licensing, fees, permits, and review boards it can seem impossible to get started at all.
I want to make it easier for citizens to pursue their entrepreneurial endeavors by targeting and eliminating unnecessary, burdensome regulations and fees that serve as a barrier to entry for everyday Georgians. I would like to strengthen the state’s resources to attract new businesses to operate in Georgia and bring jobs to our local communities, ensuring we remain the #1 state to do business in!
We need to appropriate, from the State budget,  money to expand  the technical programs offered that provide high school students with the skills needed to procure a good paying job after graduation. An educated, abundant workforce will attract good manufacturing jobs to our rural communities, employing locals! In order to keep great teachers we need to be able to pay them competitive wages. This is not only an investment in our education system but an investment in America’s next generation — an investment in America’s future workforce!

#5 Georgia’s Veterans

We owe an un-payable debt the the men and women whom have put their lives on the line in defense of our Freedom and Values.
There are federal resources available for our service members but we as a state can do more to help our heroes adjust to civilian life.
I want to expand mental health services and occupational training/ job placement programs for our veterans giving them the help and resources they need to keep them off the streets and achieving success!

#6 Rural Healthcare Reform

The current healthcare options in South Georgia aren’t working. Affordable Insurance premiums, prescription drug costs, and programs like “Peachcare For Kids”  are being compromised by a system that is developed by lobbyist and businesses to work for major hub cites like Atlanta.
I will partner with public and private healthcare providers, businesses, and area hospitals to push ‘rural reforms’ that are based on private sector solutions leading to better service for our uninsured children, better providers, and lower medical costs.

#7 State Sovereignty

The 10th Amendment to the United States Constitution guarantees state’s rights and it should be consistently exercised and defended by the State Legislator. The centralized powers of Washington need to be relinquished to the states and their local communities.
A one size fits all policy that works well on paper in Washington will not always be effective in the State of Georgia, or specifically Georgia State Senate District 3. Policy is best handled at the local level where the needs of the community are best understood.

#8 End State Sanctioned Cannabis Prohibition

We as a state need to address our complicated history with cannabis and decriminalize possession and cultivation of cannabis for personal use by adults 21 and over.

We need to expunge criminal records for cannabis offenses and restore 2nd Amendment rights for those with felony cannabis convictions.

In many states that have already decriminalized or legalized cannabis, the plant has proven to be a successful alternative to dangerous prescription opiates and other harmful painkillers.

I’m not saying the state has to recognize or approve of cannabis use, but we do need to stop treating those that choose to indulge like criminals!

Cannabis doesn’t ruin lives, cannabis prohibition does!

#9 Establishing Term Limits

I support limiting the terms of ALL public offices.
In general, an incumbent has a political advantage over challengers at elections such as name recognition due to their previous work in the office, easier access to campaign finance, as well as government resources that can be indirectly and unfairly used to boost the incumbent’s re-election campaign.
I pledge that as a member of the state legislature I will cosponsor, vote for, and defend all legislation that seeks to level the playing field, promote innovation, and protect our republic from special interests.
The Georgia Capitol Building is not a country club, it is a public office that needs committed citizen legislators that are ready to get to work for our State!

#10 Our 2nd Amendment Right!

The Constitution of the United States is very clear, the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed!
If it is a requirement that a person be permitted to carry a gun it becomes a privilege and not a right. That is why when elected I will introduce a Constitutional Carry bill that will abolish the need for a Weapons Carry Permit to open or conceal carry a firearm for personal defense in the state of Georgia.
As a state legislator I will support and defendand the rights our forefathers preserved and intended for us in the United States Constituition.
